Science - Roundness of the Earth

Roundness of the Earth has been proven by its images from space.  However, this fact was not known centuries ago.

Qur'an - Roundness of the Earth

In Verse 39:5, the Arabic word    كَوِّرُ    means "to wrap" and  "to roll".   Wrapping or rolling the night and day over the Earth!

He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver 39:5

But nay! I call to witness [Our being] the Sustainer of all the points of sunrise and sunset:  verily, well able are We 70:40

Related to the above verse, Hazrat Imam Ali ibne AbiTalib (AS) explained :   By using the plural form of the words, Allah is referring to 360 different sunrise and sunset points for any specific location.

(i.e., by modern standards, the position of sunrise/sunset for a specific location changes every day during a year – By saying 360, Imam is proving that the Earth is a sphere! How else can you end up with 360?!)

For the full explanation of what Imam said about sunrise/sunset, please see "Mystery of the sunrise and sunset".

The word  دَحَٓا  means to spread, setting out, and adjusting spherically.  It carries a meaning of roundness.  This meaning is also present in other words that are derived from it such as an Ostrich egg and the children game of rolling balls or stones into a hole.

And after that He spread the earth  79:30
