Expansion and Contraction of Universe

Science - Expansion/Contraction of universe

The Big Bang Theory stands as the foremost explanation of the origins of the universe. It posits that our known universe originated from a minuscule singularity and subsequently expanded over the course of 13.8 billion years to evolve into the vast cosmos we observe today. Given the widespread comprehension of this scientific theory, we shall refrain from delving into its detailed discussion.

Qur'an - Expansion/Contraction of universe

Qur'an 51:47 obviously points out the expansion of universe by saying "We are certainly expanding it a lot!" The meaning  "a lot" is conveyed by the choice of Arabic words used in the verse.  Another concept that can be understood from this verse is that God is still creating and expanding the universe! In other words, it is still expanding a lot.

"We built the universe with great might, and We are certainly expanding it" 51:47

Qur'an 21:104 states: Similar to rolling/folding up a paper scroll such that its contents can't be seen and read anymore, God will roll up the heavens back into its original state (a single entity before the Big Bang). This verse points out 2 things. Initially, the heavens had been folded up before the Big Bang! The verse states that at some point into the future the expansion will stop and the universe will contract back to the initial state of being folded and God will create a new creation and this is a promise from God (a new world will be created including us)!

"The Day that We roll up the heavens like a scroll rolled up for books (completed),-  as We produced the first creation, so shall We produce a new one:  a promise We have undertaken: truly shall We fulfil it." 21:104

Additionally, Qur'an 81:1-3 describes the state of the Sun, stars, and the Earth whenever the contraction of universe would begin The universe will be rolled up and the Earth's mountains will fall apart.

"When the sun shall be folded up, and when the stars fall, and when the mountains are made to vanish" 81:1-3

"They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal, while the earth entirely will be [within] His power on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded with His power. Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him" 39:67

Events related to the Contraction of universe (Big Crunch)
Quran 36:38 reveals another significant insight into the precursor of the universe's contraction. It simply indicates the existence of a "stopping point" for the Sun's movement. Moreover, the Quran states that there is a specific duration for the Sun and moon's motion, implying that they will eventually come to a halt. As a result, gravitational laws would be affected, and the stability of celestial bodies' orbits would be compromised. The Sun, which currently consumes 4 million tons of matter per second, will eventually perish as its fuel is completely exhausted. At that point, the energy emitted from the Sun, resulting from the conversion of hydrogen nuclei into helium through nuclear fusion, will cease. Consequently, the Sun's energy and, therefore, its life will come to an end once this fuel supply has been depleted.

"And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing." 36:38

"He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver." 39:5

"And the moon darkens, And the sun and the moon are joined," 75:8-9

Qur'an 99:1-2 also describes the condition of the Earth as part of the contraction of the universe! When the Solar system and gravitational forces falls apart (folded), the Earth will also explode and be destroyed.

"When the earth is shaken in its ultimate quaking, and when the earth throws out all its contents," 99:1-2

Qur'an 101:5 describes the end of this universe when the mountains will be scattered in the atmosphere like the flakes of carded wool.  Verses 81:1-2 and 82:1-2 described the Sun and stars disintegrating.

"And the mountains will be like carded wool." 101:5

When the sky breaks apart, And when the stars fall, scattering, 82:1-2

When the sun (with its spacious light) is folded up; And when the stars fall, dispersing 81:1-2

Then when the stars become dim and fade away  77:8

And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms, 56:5

When the mountains are scattered (to the winds) as dust;  77:10

And the mountains shall vanish, as if they were a mirage. 78:20
