Science - Different types of ocean waves
Modern scientific studies have unequivocally demonstrated that various factors, including tides, temperature variations, and differences in density, have a significant influence on the formation of ocean currents and waves in the vast depths of our oceans. One prime illustration of this phenomenon is the Gulf Stream. Furthermore, the movement of nutrients within the ocean and the infiltration of CO2 from the atmosphere into the water also contribute to these dynamic processes. For instance, while surface waves are primarily caused by wind and tides, waves occurring at lower depths can be attributed to changes in temperature and density.
It is important to note that ocean water is a complex mixture of dissolved salts and gases. As one delves deeper into the ocean, the intensity of light diminishes, and the temperature gradually decreases, accompanied by an increase in pressure. In fact, light is unable to penetrate beyond a depth of 200 meters.

Qur'an - Different types of ocean waves
Verse 24:40 beautifully portrays a boundless, mysterious ocean with cascading waves that seem to stretch endlessly. As if that weren't captivating enough, the verse goes on to describe how the clouds blankets the entire scene. However, beneath this mesmerizing spectacle lies an abyss of absolute darkness, so impenetrable that even your own hand, if held in front of your face, becomes invisible. It becomes evident that as one delves deeper into the ocean's depths, darkness intensifies, but the verse unveils a fascinating scientific insight: the presence of various types of waves, including the enigmatic internal waves that reside in the profound depths of the ocean!
It also describes depths where there is total darkness and you can't see your hand if you hold it in front of your face. People of 1400 years ago were not aware of internal ocean currents and could not dive to the depths of total darkness. The maximum depth a human can dive without oxygen is around 60 feet (18 meters) where there is still some light. Beyond this depth, the body requires a supply of oxygen to function properly.
From the spirituality point of view, as you distant yourself from the Creator, you receive less & less of His Light and consequently the pressure and darkness will increase in your life (i.e. diving deeper and deeper into the darkness of the ocean - Light decreases while pressure increases).
Or (the Unbelievers' state) is like the depths of darkness in a vast deep ocean, which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, topped by (dark) clouds: depths of darkness, one above another: if a man stretches out his hands, he can hardly see it! for any to whom Allah giveth not light, there is no light! 24:40
